Man or woman, joy or pain – is it sex or innocent child’s play? The life-size, humanoid metal figures by Caroline Mesquita (b. 1989) are in a permanent state of shifting and ambiguity, and, unlike the viewer, they seem perfectly comfortable with that. Welcome to a body of work where even the word ‘transvestite’ is much too specific. Or, as Caroline Mesquita puts it, ‘I like it when nothing at all is really decided.’
